Area of Responsibility

We are located on northwestern shore of Lake Huron at the northwestern end of the notorious Thunder Bay. Our Area of Responsibility covers the shoreline from Stoneport south to Sturgeon Point and eastward to the international line in the center of the lake, 3300 square miles. The bay itself covers 81 square miles. It was named by the Indians who traveled and lived in this region. Most say the Indians properly named it.
Take a good look at this portion of our Area of Responsibility. This area and just a few miles to the north of Thunder Bay Island have more vessels on the bottom per square mile than any other place in North America.
The National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration recently opened the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve. Many of the wrecks have been located and identified and are open to exploration by scuba divers with tours running from Alpena.
